Levels of phosphorus in wastewater can be reduced using chemical precipitation or biologically by polyphosphate-accumulating organisms. The chemical method is preferred over the biological in the Czech Republic. Polyphosphate-accumulating organisms include, besides others, the bacterial genus Tetrasphaera. The occurrence of this genus has not yet been monitored in Czech wastewater treatment plants. Thanks to this piece of information, it could be possible to establish appropriate conditions for enhanced biological phosphorus removal.
Thus this study focuses mainly on monitoring the genus Tetrasphaera in different wastewater treatment plants in the Czech Republic using fluorescence in situ hybridization with five specific oligonucleotide probes followed by image analysis. The results are compared with the forms of technological lines of wastewater treatment plants. The possibility of the application of enhanced biological phosphorus removal in Czech wastewater treatment plants will be evaluated in further research.
